Why sunrise

Why balloons fly at dawn

A balloon has no engine to steer with, so it needs gentle air. Early morning is when the wind is usually lightest, which makes take-off and landing smoother and the whole flight easier to predict.

Dawn also changes how the desert looks. Low light stretches shadows across the dunes and turns the sand copper, so ridges and tracks that disappear at midday stand out clearly. The air is cooler too, which matters in a country where midday heat can be hard to enjoy outdoors.

If you would rather focus on the scenery itself, our guide to the aerial views of the Dubai desert covers what you can see from the basket.

The morning plan

What happens on a sunrise balloon ride

Exact times change with the season, so we confirm yours the day before. The order stays the same.

Pick-up before first light

Exact times change with the season, so we confirm yours the day before. The order stays the same.

2

Welcome at the Majlis camp

Arrive to refreshments, a short safety briefing and your first look at the balloon lying flat on the sand.

3

Inflation as the sky brightens

The crew fills the envelope with air and then heat. It is worth watching: the balloon rises from the ground as the horizon turns pale.

4

Lift-off around sunrise

You climb into the basket and rise with the sun. The pilot picks the altitude and direction that the morning air allows.

5

Up to 60 minutes in the air

Drift quietly over dunes, tracks and scrub. Flights are slow and calm, with the occasional burst of the burner.

6

Landing and certificate

The crew meets the balloon on the ground. You receive a signed flight certificate and return to camp.

7

Refreshments, breakfast or more desert

What follows depends on your package: refreshments only, a gourmet breakfast, camel and falcon moments, or dune bashing. Then you are driven back.

Each package fills the morning differently. Compare them in our hot air balloon adventure packages.

Weather

When a flight does not go ahead

Rain is rare in Dubai, but wind and low visibility matter more to a balloon than temperature. If conditions are not safe, the pilot decides not to launch. That decision is made on the morning, and it is never rushed.

Ask us how rescheduling works when you book, and give us a flexible day if you can. Guests who travel in December and January often book early, because those are the busiest mornings.
